Tracking Trends

MEXICO | Industry only barely expanding. In the first nine months of the year industrial output in the broader sense was only 1.1% higher than in the same period of 2004, with most of the push coming from the construction sector, up 2.7% (all other sectors grew by less than 1%). In manufacturing, which expanded by 0.8%, it was the maquila (re-export) subsector that provided the momentum, with a 2.5% increase in production. All sectors displayed a lower rate of growth in September (oil production actually contracted slightly over the year). In 2004 industrial production expanded by 3.8%.
