REGION: US gears up for Central American antidrugs drive

Central America is being played up by the US government as an increasingly important locus for the war against drugs. In line with the Pentagon's efforts to portray the area as meriting special attention on security grounds, the State Department last week made a pitch in congress for greater funding of the anti-narcotics effort. The pitch required a fair amount of spin.
