Politics starts dominating major projects. With the 2006 electoral race already informally in motion, politics has begun to creep into major economy projects, starting with the free-trade agreement Colombia (with two other Andean nations) has been negotiating with the US since May 2004. Horacio Serpa, the former Liberal presidential candidate defeated by President Alvaro Uribe in 2002, has launched a nationwide campaign against the signing of the FTA, which has been scheduled for conclusion before the end of this year. Protests against the FTA, most notably from the farming sector, have been on the increase since October.
