REGION: South America leads the world in deforestation

The good news is that the rate of deforestation worldwide has slowed down. The bad news is that Latin America, which loses about 4.7m hectares of forest cover a year, accounts for almost 65% of the world's annual loss. This emerges from the FAO's latest annual assessment of forestry resources.
