CHILE: Uncertainty follows poor win by Bachelet

Much as expected, Michelle Bachelet of the ruling Concertación alliance came out ahead in the first round of the presidential elections on 11 December but failed to win outright. However, she did so with the lowest plurality achieved by the Concertación since it first came to power with the restoration of elected rule in 1990. This makes her run-off with Sebastián Piñera, of the conservative Renovación Nacional (RN), too tight a contest to call just yet.
