BRAZIL: As Lula flounders, hints of a Serra-Maia ticket

Elections are just over ten months away, nominations just over three at most - and it has started to tell. As the pro-government camp starts bandying about the possibility that President Lula da Silva may not stand for reelection, the man most-cited as standard-bearer of the conservative Partido da Frente Liberal (PFL), César Maia, has offered to step aside in favour of José Serra of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB).
