URUGUAY: US treaty threatened from within ruling coalition

President Tabaré Vázquez may be heading for a defeat at the hands of his own side in congress. The former guerrillas of the Movimiento de Participación Popular (MPP) and the Communist party (PCU), both members of the ruling Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio (EP-FA), have announced that they will oppose the investment treaty with the US despite the changes Vázquez had persuaded the US to accept. They say they have the votes to block it.
