Lucio Gutiérrez is released, adding new uncertainty to Ecuadorean politics

Lucio Gutiérrez, the former president of Ecuador ousted in a congressional coup in April 2005 and jailed in October to await trial on a charge of sedition, has been released and the case against him dismissed. He is now preparing to contest the elections scheduled for 15 October and his comeback bid could provide the spice that has so far been completely absent from the pre-election period.
