EL SALVADOR: Arena wins; FMLN bounces back
It took four days for the result of the most disputed contest of the 12 March, the one for the mayoralty of San Salvador, to emerge. The winner was Violeta Menjívar of the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) by a mere 44 votes. In congress the FMLN managed to expand its representation, but much less so than the long-ruling Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) which confirmed its preeminence, but failed to secure a majority of its own.
