MEXICO | Peru is likeliest regional gas supplier. Energy Minister Fernando Canales said on 3 May that Peru was 'most advanced' in its positioning as a potential foreign supplier of natural gas to Mexico, inasmuch as 'it has access to the sea, a gas pipeline from the Camisea deposits to the coast and a gas liquefaction plant'. Bolivia, he pointed out, is not likely to have any of these things in the short term. Before the end of May the state power utility CFE will be inviting tenders for the supply of natural gas to its generating plants. However, said Canales, in the short term it will be relying on local resources as there are 10 regions capable of delivering gas. In the long run Mexico will seek suppliers abroad. When that happens, Peru will be competing with other potential suppliers such as Australia, Indonesia and Russia.
