NICARAGUA: Ortega seen catching up with Montealegre

The headline news was startling: a reputable opinion survey released last week showed that former president Daniel Ortega, candidate of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), had overtaken Eduardo Montealegre to become the favourite to win the 5 November presidential elections. A closer examination shows this to be a tentative conclusion, although indicative of the fact, as revealed in other recent polls, that Ortega has been rising from behind to position himself very close to the front-runner.
