MEXICO-US: Deterrent effect claimed for troop deployments

As the presence of National Guard units built up steadily along the US border with Mexico, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted a countrywide sweep in search of illegal immigrants. The US government says the deployment of the Guard units has already translated into a decline in the inflow of immigrants. The ICE sweep, for its part, led to 2,100 arrests.
