Significance: Relations between Correa and Colombia have got off to a bad start. Prior to his election victory Correa irritated President Alvaro Uribe by refusing to call the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) "terrorists". Since Uribe's decision to restart the spraying of herbicide on the border, after a 10-month pause, their relationship has deteriorated even further, with Correa describing the decision as a "hostile act".
"With great sadness we have decided to suspend the trip to Bogotá. It is simply not possible that the president-elect of Ecuador can visit Bogotá while they are bombing the border with glysophate," Correa said at a press conference in Caracas with Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez . "Our arms are open to President Uribe. We have spoken this morning and he told me that he is going to ask President Palacio to visit Ecuador tomorrow." Palacio subsequently said Uribe's visit was "inopportune" and told him not to come.
