Weekly Report - 23 September 2003

Tracking trends...

COSTA RICA | Exports driving the economy. Exports are the most dynamic sector in the Costa Rican economy, having reached US$4.2bn by end-August; 20% more than a year earlier. However, most of the increase has been taking place in free zones and non-traditional sectors, and this has limited the impact of the expansion on the jobs scene, which remains stagnant.

HONDURAS | Call for tariff on Chinese goods. The industrialists' association, Andi, has asked the government to impose a 40% tariff on all imports of Chinese goods, on the grounds that China is engaging in unfair competition through deliberate depreciation of its currency. Andi president Adolfo Facussé says this has been verified by the US government. China has emerged as a strong competitor of Central America for the supply of the US market.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC | Tourism continues to grow. Tourist arrivals in the Dominican Republic in the first eight months of the year totalled 1.96m, or 22.3% more than in the same period of last year. The trend points upwards: arrivals in August were 30.5% higher than a year earlier. The figures, produced by the Asociación de Desarrollo Juan Dolio-Guayacanes, do not include revenues.

CUBA | Once again, a property register. Private property owners in Cuba will be able to register their holdings once again, after a hiatus of more than 30 years. Actually, the Registro de la Propiedad Mercantil y del Patrimonio was reactivated last year for state-owned holdings, and is now being opened by stages for private owners. The aim is to have a registry office operating in each of Cuba's 169 municipalities by 2006.
