DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Fernández rejects proposal to extend his term

For the first time since its creation for the late former president Juan Bosch in 1973, the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) has gained control of both chambers of congress, outnumbering all of the opposition (overwhelmingly so in the senate). This promises President Leonel Fernández an easier ride for the second half of this term. This will not, he announced last week, lead him to try to orchestrate an extension of his mandate.
