BOLIVIA: Bid to speed up 'nationalisation' backfires on Bolivia

Bolivian hydrocarbons minister, Andrés Soliz, probably thought he was simply carrying out the wishes of President Evo Morales when on 12 September he ordered the takeover without compensation of the country's two refineries, belonging to Petrobrás, and the establishment of a full state monopoly on the marketing of hydrocarbons. The instant, indignant reaction of both Petrobrás and the Brazilian government forced Bolivia into an embarrassing climbdown, which included the replacement of Soliz and most of his team.
