BOLIVIA: Morales gets voluntary coca eradication pledge

On 13 September, President Evo Morales surprised many by suddenly cutting short a visit to Guatemala and rushing back home to what appeared to be a relatively minor meeting with coca producers in Cochabamba. Its importance was underestimated: Morales went to exact from it an all-region commitment to eradicate 5,000 hectares of coca plantations this year. This may have helped him get away with little more than a slap on the wrist in the annual US 'certification' round.
