MEXICO: López Obrador tries to keep all options open

On 15 September, it was President Vicente Fox's turn to blink. He decided not to hold the traditional 'grito' in the Zócalo in Mexico City, where Andrés Manuel López Obrador had announced that he would be presiding over a rival ceremony. Instead Fox moved the event to its original site, Dolores Hidalgo in Guanajuato. López Obrador, for his part, got himself acclaimed 'legitimate president' on 16 September. He is preparing for a lengthy opposition campaign to be conducted, in the main, by conventional means.
