BRAZIL: Lula camp hit by election-eve scandal

With the elections just under two weeks away, until yesterday this week's news appeared to be that President Lula da Silva had managed to consolidate an unassailable lead over his closest rival, Geraldo Alckmin. Now, suddenly, Lula is looking at the prospect of being charged with a breach of the electoral law and an abuse of economic power which, theoretically at least, could knock him out of the race.
