GUATEMALA: Army to patrol streets for another two terms

Guatemala's army must continue to support the Policí­a Nacional Civil (PNC) in domestic security operations for at least another two presidential terms, the defence minister Francisco Bermúdez divulged. Somewhat bizarrely his announcement on 30 September did not attract as much attention as President Oscar Berger's promise to keep on 3,000 soldiers for the whole of 2007 to assist the PNC to combat organised crime. This caused consternation among human rights groups and triggered objections from foreign embassies in Guatemala City.
