BRAZIL: Lula's candidacy gains strength

President Lula da Silva's re-election campaign seems to have gained strength during the last week. After narrowly missing out on a first-round victory because of the "dossiergate" [WR-06-39], his popularity among voters has bounced back in the latest opinion polls. Lula has also received the backing of important politicians. Whether their support is the result of ideological preference is debatable, however.
