Significance: The Carabineros said that the attack was the worst
outbreak of violence in the Mapuche area since November 1998. An outbreak of
terrorism in the remote south of Chile presents another problem for the Santiago
government which has failed to prevent issues such as higher education funding
and the reform of the Santiago mass transit system becoming major political
problems.
The attackers, presumed to be Mapuches, burnt a bus, a lorry, a pick up and
two camps run by Angelino Gerardo Cerda who is a subcontractor for Miminco, a
forest products company which owns the forests. The arson started a small forest
fire. In 1998, a self-proclaimed group, the Coordinara Arauco Malleco torched
three lorries.
