Garcí­a suffers setback in Peru's regional elections

President Alan Garcí­a shrugged off defeat for his ruling Partido Aprista Peruano (PAP) in the regional, provincial and municipal elections on 19 November as having no bearing on national politics. This was not what he said after the PAP swept 12 regional presidencies in 2002. Then, he hailed his party's performance as a “warning sign" for President Alejandro Toledo, whose party won in just one region. This time, the PAP won just three regional presidencies.
