Cuban revolution may 'self-destroy'

Development: On 8 June María del Carmen Concepción, a senior official belonging to the secretariat of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC)'s central committee, said that the revolution may 'self-destroy' if the economic situation on the island does not improve quickly for ordinary Cubans.
Significance: Although the risk of the revolution imploding due to internal weaknesses was already flagged up by former President Fidel Castro in November 2005, Concepción's declaration was very candid. The fact that her statement was reported in official state newspaper Granma marks a shift in the government's attitude to the media, possibly responding to the recent internal call for press coverage on the island to "more closely reflect reality".
