Cuba faces uncertain year ahead

Cuban President Fidel Castro might recover to lead the country in 2007. That was the tentative conclusion of a Spanish surgeon sent to Havana to carry out a medical check on Castro in late December. Given that Cuba does not want for medical men it is a fair bet that Garcí­a Sabrido was called in to give an independent assessment of Castro's condition with the aim of putting an end to persistent speculation abroad about the state of his health. Sabrido obliged: he said Castro did not have cancer but a problem with his digestive system and could return to power "if his recovery is complete".
