Development: On 6 October Argentina's president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, asked her Chilean counterpart Michelle Bachelet to back Néstor Kirchner (Fernández's husband) as secretary general of Unión de Naciones Suramericanas (Unasur).
Significance: Kirchner's desire to lead Unasur is surprising. Not only does he play a key role in the Argentine government as Fernández's closest advisor and head of the ruling party, but while president of Argentina (2003-2007) he showed disdain for intra-regional initiatives by publicly doubting their efficacy and shunning summits.
