URUGUAY |
Trade with the US. A Uruguayan delegation descended on Washington last week to resume trade and investment talks. Uruguay and the US signed a bilateral trade and investment framework agreement (TIFA) last January. Opposition from within the ruling Frente Amplio coalition over improving trade links with the US seems to be dying down. Indeed, the agriculture minister, José Mujica, who had opposed the deal, sanctioned the Uruguayan delegation. Mujica aims to increase Uruguay's current quota of 20,000 tonnes of beef which do not pay tariffs to enter the US. He also wants to reach similar agreements for lamb and poultry. The US administration seems keen on reaching a free-trade agreement with Uruguay but this is opposed by Uruguay's Mercosur partners, Argentina and Brazil.
