Development: On 13 January Eduardo Frei, the presidential candidate from the ruling centre-left Concertación alliance, received a double boost. The first was an opinion poll that put him neck-and-neck with his opponent in the second round run-off, the rightwing candidate Sebastián Piñera. The second was a fulsome endorsement by a dissident socialist, Marco Enrí­quez-Ominami, who finished third in the first round of the presidential election a month ago.
