MEXICO: PRI wins in Yucatán

The opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), in alliance with the Partido Verde Ecologista de México, won convincingly in the state election in Yucatán on 20 May. This was the first election since President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa took office on 1 December 2006. It is a significant defeat for both him and his Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) which won the Yucatán governorship for the first time in 2001.
