Port strike costs Peru

Development: On 15 May exporters estimated that the on-going port workers strike, affecting the country's largest port, Callao, is costing Peru US$68m a day.

Significance: The Callao port, which handles 70% of Peru's imports and exports, ground to a halt on 12 May over workers' demands. The head of the Asociación de Exportadores (ADEX) and the Sociedad de Comercio Exterior del Perú (ComexPerú), which represent export, import and shipping companies, called for the Peruvian congress to ignore the demands of the port workers. Adex argues pay increases would damage commercial competition. The strike demonstrates the powerful position of the 1,100 container and port workers.
