COLOMBIA | Chiquita faces lawsuit. The relatives of 174 Colombians murdered by paramilitaries and Farc guerrillas in Urabá and Magdalena between 1997 and 2004 are prosecuting the US banana giant, Chiquita Brands. Their lawyers filed a suit in a US federal court on 7 June based on Chiquita's confession in court in March to funding the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) to the tune of US$1.7m in more than 100 separate payments over this period. The suit accuses Chiquita of having "hired, armed, contracted with, or otherwise directed terrorist paramilitary security forces," who were believed to be interfering with its operations in Colombia.
