El Salvador: On 6 September President Mauricio Funes met US congressmen to lobby for Salvadoran nationals, enrolled in the Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for the seventh time, to be given a permanent immigrant status. The TPS, which allows undocumented migrants to remain temporarily in the US with a work permit, is granted to countries that have suffered natural disasters or civil wars and currently benefits El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Funes also sought around US$1.5bn in loans from the World Bank and other financial institutions.
