El Salvador: On 6 September President Mauricio Funes met US
congressmen to lobby for Salvadoran nationals, enrolled in the Temporary
Protection Status (TPS) for the seventh time, to be given a permanent immigrant
status. The TPS, which allows undocumented migrants to remain temporarily in the
US with a work permit, is granted to countries that have suffered natural
disasters or civil wars and currently benefits El Salvador, Honduras and
Nicaragua. Funes also sought around US$1.5bn in loans from the World Bank and
other financial institutions.
