Volatility increases before Guerrero election

Development: On 17 January, Mexican security forces reported a shootout with an unidentified armed group, killing four people near Coyuca de Catalán, Guerrero.

Significance:  With gubernatorial elections less than two weeks away, Guerrero is highly volatile. The election is directly pitting a left-wing coalition led by the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) against a right-wing alliance led by the main traditional Partido Revolucionario Institutional (PRI), and so is a useful test of electoral sentiment ahead of the scheduled presidential elections in 2012. Though official reports indicate that the latest incident was related to organised criminal groups, heightened political tensions in the state have already resulted in a violent attack against a PRD electoral tribunal representative.
