Development: On 25 January, Senator Joseph Lambert, the national coordinator for President René Préval's Inite party, said that today (26 January) the Inite presidential candidate, Jude Célestin, would officially announce his withdrawal from the presidential race.
Significance: Préval has caved in to international pressure from the US and UN. Célestin's withdrawal would end the political stalemate caused by controversy over the election results, paving the way for a second round between Mirlande Manigat, of the opposition Rassemblement des Démocrates Nationaux Progressistes, and the popular musician Michel Martelly (who the provisional electoral court (CEP) showed in third place, behind Célestin).
