Refusing Venezuela is 'idiotic' says Mujica

Development: On 27 January, Uruguay's president José Mujica, on official visit in Venezuela, remarked that not allowing Venezuela to join the Southern Cone Common Market (Mercosur) was “idiotic".

Significance: Mujica's left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) government is becoming increasingly outspoken and eager to align itself behind Venezuela's president Hugo Chávez .  Mujica's remarks come almost immediately after some controversial comments on the governments of Peru and Colombia from Uruguay's vice-foreign minister, Roberto Conde. Conde said that in his opinion the governments of Peru and Colombia represented a “regression for the region", characterising them as “militarist and fascistic" governments.
