Chávez exploits Libyan conflict in Uruguay

Development: On 30 March, Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez concluded a one-day visit to Uruguay with a joint press conference with his Uruguayan counterpart, José Mujica, calling for unity between “brother countries".

Significance: So far, Chávez 's South American tour has centred on the idea that Latin American countries should increase economic cooperation to present a unified front against capitalism and the “imperialist" global order. Although Chávez has made similar remarks before, the current situation in Libya and its incidence on international oil prices have given him a new cause to urge his sympathisers and fellow regional leaders to rally behind him. Fortunately for Chávez , a growing number of Latin American countries, worried by soaring oil prices, are questioning the UN-backed military intervention in Libya.
