Another First Lady to succeed her husband?

Development: On 10 April, at the national convention for the Dominican Republic's ruling Partido de Liberación Dominicana (PLD), it was announced that President Leonel Fernández's wife, Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, had been accepted as a presidential pre-candidate in the party's primaries.

Significance: Cedeño's nomination immediately followed her husband's 9 April public announcement that he would not stand again, in the 2012 general elections, a possibility which had been an ongoing source of speculation, despite the constitutional ban on consecutive re-election. Now the question for the PLD is whether Cedeño, a political novice, best represents the continuation of her husband's political success.
