Álvaro Uribe Vélez is an independent but is associated with rightwing politics and accused by his detractors of intimate ties to rightwing paramilitaries and the infamous Medellín drugs cartel. A career politician in the region of his birth, Antioquia, Uribe served as both a senator for the region and as its governor before successfully being elected president of Colombia in 2002.
