Exports: According to the latest report by the Centro de Trámites de las Exportaciones (Cetrex), Nicaragua’s exports were valued at US$1.2bn in the first half of 2011, a 28.8% increase on the same period of 2010. The leading exports were high quality coffee, beef and gold. The US was the biggest market, accounting for 32% of the total, followed by Venezuela (11%) and Canada (10%). The private sector, which is jittery over the health of Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez (recently diagnosed with an unspecified cancer), is calling for a free trade agreement to formalize trade relations with Venezuela, to which exports increased from US$25m in 2008 to US$252m in 2010.
