COLOMBIA: All fake?

Colombia has long been associated with the business of ‘falsification’: whether it is money, counterfeit goods or motor oil, criminal bands have managed to fake a myriad of things. However, it is now becoming apparent that even government data is falsely manufactured. From the number of pupils attending school in order to raid the government coffers of some Col$36bn (US$20.30m), the fake demobilisation of paramilitaries and guerrillas [RA-11-03], to the posing of extra-judicially executed civilians as guerrillas killed in combat – the so-called ‘false positives’ [RA-10-07].
