ARGENTINA | Shipwreck. The government revealed that it intended to introduce tighter restrictions on tourism in the Antarctic in response to concern over possible future environmental damage after the cruise ship Explorer sank on 23 November after striking an iceberg just 96km north of the Antarctic Peninsula. All 154 passengers and crew were rescued. The government also plans to sue the Canadian company GAP Adventure, which organised the tour from Ushuaia. After flying over the area, the environment secretary, Romina Picolotti, said that a minor spill was being broken up by winds and waves but that there was a risk that the hull of the ship could crack under pressure on the seabed, releasing an estimated 185,000 litres of bunker fuel.
