President Alvaro Uribe invited his French counterpart, Nicolas Sarkozy, to
work with him to come up with "new ways" to effect the humanitarian
exchange with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc). He did not
anoint him as the replacement for Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez in the role
of mediator but rather as an "ally". Uribe authorised the peace
commissioner, Luis Carlos Restrepo, to organise a meeting with the Farc at a
time and place of its choosing but not in a demilitarised zone (DMZ). Restrepo
will travel to Paris shortly to invite Sarkozy to attend the meeting.End of preview - This article contains approximately 686 words.
