NICARAGUA: Ortega inaugurates the CPCs

Despite the congressional vote to sever the link between the citizen power councils (CPCs) and the executive, President Daniel Ortega forged ahead with his original plan, in flagrant disregard for the country's institutional structures. Once again the opposition proved unable to unite forces, stand up to Ortega or resist his deal-making. Civil society groups condemned his actions and warned that if he continues to abuse instruments of power, they will invoke their "civil right to revoke his mandate".
