President Juan Manuel Santos is aiming to dismantle Colombia's principal armed groups by the end of his mandate in 2014 and restore peace to the country. It is a hugely ambitious public statement of intent. It is also a sign of supreme self-confidence from a man who, in less than a year since he came to power last August, has struck the most serious blow against the country's largest guerrilla group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) in its 47 year history, by successfully targeting its military commander, best known as ‘Mono Jojoy', and masterminded the full restoration of ties with Venezuela. This was capped off with congress' approval of his government's flagship victims and land policy.
