The national leaders of Mexico's three main parties met on 25 May and
announced that instead of allowing the electors of Michoacán to pick the next
governor they may agree on a joint candidate. The announcement came after a week
of mounting gang violence in the state. This political development followed the
assassination of a key General, Jorge Juárez Loera, on 21 May. He had been
number three in the Mexican military hierarchy. In between these two events
President Barack Obama nominated his new ambassador to Mexico on 24 May: he is
Earl Anthony Wayne, currently deputy ambassador to Afghanistan and a
counter-terrorism specialist. Wayne, a career diplomat, was ambassador to
