ECONOMIC OVERVIEW: PARAGUAY

Paraguay's beef sales continue to soar in value on international markets. According to latest industry data, complied by the national animal health service (Senacsa), fresh, frozen and processed beef exports to May this year totalled 70,400 tonnes, down 10% decrease in volume terms year-on-year. However the value of these exports was US$ 451m, up 21% increase year-on-year. Paraguay is set to break its historical sales record of US$ 950m, set last year. Interestingly, Russia is consolidating itself as Paraguay's main beef export destination by volume, with 26,220 tonnes in exports to date in 2011. The sale of offal products drove the increase, with 9,200 tonnes in exports, a 35% year-on-year increase. However, Paraguay's most important beef export destination by value remains Chile, which paid US$ 149m for the 24,492 tonnes of beef, compared to Russia's US$ 110m. Paraguayan beef is currently sold in 38 countries, just over half of the 60 markets it has access to. Although Paraguay is certified to supply the European Union, only 10 European countries including Italy, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and the UK, currently import Paraguayan beef.
