The US and Latin America: where to now?

There was some, but not much, expectation that US President Barack Obama's second visit to Latin America might bring some sign of renewed US interest in the region. It did not. There was rhetoric about ‘partnership' and pleasantries about democracy, peppered with what many have seen as evasions, omissions and faux pas.  Even on what appeared to be the main focus of the visit — trade and economic relations — fell short of his hosts' expectations. Two months after the visit, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, failed to impress several former Latin American presidents with what had been billed as a prelude to a new policy towards the region.
