BRAZIL: Tackling the dollar problem

The US dollar exchange rate against the Real reached a 12-year low this week and Brazil's financial authorities are again concerned about its decline. The weak dollar is proving to be a real problem for Brazil as it makes the Real more attractive to investors, fuelling inflation, and at the same time undermines the country's domestic producers' competitiveness. To make matters worse, it appears that there is little that Brazil can currently do to escape this trap.
