ARGENTINA: The secretive democracy

No-one, bar her children and the legal and technical secretary of the presidency-turned-closest confidant, Carlos Zannini, knew that President Cristina Fernández had planned to add a special announcement to her speech launching the new subsidy ‘LCDs for all' on 21 June – her re-election bid. Neither did her followers and fellow Peronists know who would be included in the ruling Frente para la Victoria (FPV)'s lists for legislative posts in the 23 October general election nor who she would choose as her vice-presidential running mate when the party registered its candidates by midnight on 25 June.
